At Matfen Hall, we take golf seriously. It’s more than a game; it’s an opportunity to experience the landscape in a different light. To slow down, find your focus, challenge yourself and enjoy the simple pleasure of time spent with friends.
That’s why we’ve put time into crafting new greens, investing in state-of-the-art facilities and turning our courses into a championship golf destination for the north of England.
Ranked 33 in the National Club Golfer’s Top 100 GB&I Resorts and 66 in Golf World’s Top 100 European Luxury Golf Resorts, find out why 2026 marks a new chapter for golf at Matfen Hall.

The Douglas
Our newly opened championship course, The Douglas tees up 18 holes of truly rewarding play, bordered by spectacular Northumbrian scenery.
It comprises nine reimagined green complexes, carefully crafted by renowned golf course architect, James Edwards. These new greens are paired with the existing Standing Stone nine to create an 18-hole course to challenge and inspire all skill levels.
Taking its name from the original nine-hole layout, The Douglas flows with the history and landscape of the grounds, taking golfers on a journey through natural water hazards, dry-stone walls and the fast-flowing River Pont.
And, to keep it all in pristine condition, a brand new and state-of-the-art irrigation system has been installed across the greens, range and courses of our expansive 300-acre estate.
Himalayas Putting Green
A brand new feature for Matfen Hall, the Himalayas Putting Green is also a first for golf in England. Its undulating design is inspired by St Andrews Ladies’ Putting Club, famously known as ‘The Himalayas’. The first of its kind in England, its carefully sculpted contours bring subtle, added complexity to a casual putting game. The result is a unique experience for those new to the sport and a new challenge for seasoned golfers.
New Features For August 2026
Following the opening of The Douglas championship course and Himalayas Putting Green in June, more golf facilities are set to open at Matfen Hall in August 2026.
The Academy - Matfen Hall’s new practice facility, The Academy will set a new standard for golf in the north of England. It will include a 15-bay Toptracer driving range, teaching bay with simulator, short-game area, and all-weather 18-hole putting course designed by James Edwards.
Woodland Path - A new woodland path has been laid, linking our 5 star hotel to the new and improved Driving Range complex. So, if you’re enjoying a golf getaway, you can enjoy a tranquil stroll through larch and pine each morning before teeing off with some Toptracer practice.

Matfen Hall Pro Am 2026
Every summer we celebrate the season with a ProAm event, and with the opening of The Douglas, 2026 will be that little bit more special.
The Johnnie Walker Matfen Hall Pro Am takes place on the 31st July, offering a £25,000 prize for the winner of its annual hole-in-one competition.
