September feels like a fresh start, a time of bright beginnings and anticipation sparkling in the last rays of summer.
And at Matfen Hall is was a month of celebration, seasonal magic and moments to treasure. So, join us to look back at September on the Estate.
PARKLAND PERFECTION
The beautiful September weather enticed guests outside to enjoy our spectacular grounds, surrounded by golden Northumbrian countryside. Our new restaurant and bar at The Keepers was a popular choice for families and groups sitting down to a relaxed dinner or sophisticated Sunday Lunch, bathed in warm light and immersed in the natural beauty of our estate.
Anyone dining on the 14th September may have enjoyed an unusual sight on the golf course as club members dressed in a country and western theme for our annual Captain’s Charity Day – raising over £4,000 for The People’s Kitchen charity.
And, the last days of the school summer holidays saw families have fun together in our state-of-the-art Simulator Studio at The Keepers, playing courses from around the world and battling it out over a virtual penalty shoot-out. And a little bird has told us there’s even more family fun to enjoy for the October Half Term holidays – with a new Angry Birds Toptracer game installed and ready to play at our Driving Range. Explore our purpose-built parkland lodge, The Keepers to reserve your table and book your session in the simulator studio.
GOLDEN MOMENTS
Misty mornings, gilded afternoons and deep, clear nights – September is a picture perfect time for any special event. And we had so much to celebrate this month at Matfen Hall.
We were privileged to host a beautiful couple on their wedding weekend, starting the celebrations the night before with a sunset al fresco dinner at The Keepers. Crisp, perfect weather saw sunlight stream through the stained glass of our Great Hall as they said their ‘I Dos’ followed by a celebration and reception flowing through the Hall and into our gardens, with floral decorations reflecting the bright and rich colours of autumn. And the close of the month saw guests enjoying the glorious weather to follow timeless country pursuits on the estate. Clay pigeon shooting on the front lawn was a huge hit, beneath bright blue skies and surrounded by rolling Northumbrian countryside to enjoy the last of the late summer sun. AUTUMN FLAVOURS
Earthy, rich and flavoursome – autumn brings a cornucopia of fresh produce and vibrant flavour. And our new menus have been expertly crafted to showcase the very best of September in Northumberland. From field and forest to plate, our refreshed Cloisters Restaurant autumn menu celebrates the whole season, from wild mushrooms, baked beetroot and blackberries to rich venison and aged beef with black garlic.
Visit Cloisters Restaurant to browse our autumnal menu and reserve your table. And new for September, our renewed wine list offers the perfect pairing, curated to bring tasting notes of rich vanilla, cinnamon and red berries. Pour an extra glass of indulgence during your next stay with a visit to our Wine Cellar for a personalised tasting experience.
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
September saw the return of a beloved old friend. Our beautiful piano, originally commissioned for Matfen Hall, returned to us – gifted by a local family who had lovingly looked after it for the last 25 years.
Made by John Broadwood & Sons, one of the oldest and most prestigious piano companies in the world, the piano will sit beneath the stairs to The Sapphire Room – ready to welcome guests and perhaps provide musical accompaniment for events to come.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING
This time of year brings a chill to the air – mornings arriving with gentle frost and evenings drawing out into cool, clear darkness. And that can mean but one thing in our country estate – it’s time to gather the kindling and light the fires.
Our first crackling log fire sparked thoughts of Christmas to come, and our exciting festive packages and events are now ready to book. Sit down to Festive Afternoon Tea in our opulent Drawing Room, get ready for the season with a Wreath Making masterclass and meet Father Christmas himself in his festive workshop. Unwrap our seasonal offers to plan a Christmas to remember with us.
