Meet the Team behind Matfen Hall: Rebecca Thomason

Spa Therapist Rebecca has been providing guests and visitors of The Retreat with treatments and rituals for the past five months. In this special edition of Tales from Our Estate, directly from our harmonious spa area, we speak to Rebecca about her role with us, including her passion for making others feel happy and relaxed.

How did you become a Spa Therapist and how long have you been in the spa industry?

I joined the spa industry after leaving school and fell in love with it from the beginning. I enjoy being hands-on with the clients and making them feel better. 

I have now been in the spa industry for 11 years and it has given me the opportunity to travel to some amazing places for work – Italy, Greece, Spain, France and more. When Covid hit, I returned to my native North East and I haven’t been happier.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I provide different treatments to different people in The Retreat and it’s that variety that I enjoy. Every day is different and I love providing clients with a little bit of everything, not just a single massage, treatment or ritual. They like to try a little bit of everything when they join us and I enjoy giving them the full Retreat experience.

What do you love most about your job? 

As well as making people feel better, I love the people I work with. I haven’t been at Matfen Hall for very long, but I already feel like I’m a part of the family. The feeling of being a part of a community is very important for me wherever I work. 

I also love the place itself. Matfen Hall is so full of history and heritage that I love working in these beautiful surroundings. There’s really no place like it.

If you could, which one item from The Retreat menu would you like to experience for yourself?

Definitely the Candle Full Body Massage. It helps you unwind so much and takes you to another level of relaxation.

What’s one special memory of your time at Matfen Hall?

I’ve only been here five months, so not one moment stands out. I’m certainly enjoying my time here, so those five months could be my one special memory, as my experience has just been so perfect.

If you could swap roles with anyone else in Matfen Hall, who would it be and why?

The Front of House staff, as I love talking to and meeting new people and finding out their little stories. I would also enjoy making guests of Matfen Hall feel relaxed and happy.

How do you relax outside of work?

I love the great outdoors. Going for walks and getting plenty of fresh air is my idea of Heaven. I also enjoy reading. I’m just in the middle of a positive mindset book, and there’s nothing I love more than curling up with a good book.
