Our Club Professional Tom has been welcoming visitors and members of the club to develop and perfect their game for just over a year. In this special edition of Tales from Our Estate, directly from our championship course, we speak to Tom about his role with us, including how he enjoys sharing his passion for golf with everyone he works with.

How did you become so passionate about golf?

I started playing when I was ten years old. I have 2 older brothers at our local club in Weymouth and so, to keep me out of trouble while they played, my parents signed me up for membership.

By the time I was twelve, my meticulous nature had developed and I started taking my own game more seriously. I quickly became a regular member of the Dorset County team, whilst also playing both national and international elite amateur tournaments before turning Professional and starting my journey on the Europro Tour which has led me to where I am now.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is different here at Matfen Hall combining everything I love about golf. Whether that be greeting and chatting with visitors and our members, sharing my passion for custom fitting or simply keeping the shop looking the best it can be. No two days are the same that’s for sure.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy chatting with our visitors and members sharing experiences and knowledge to help them make the most of their own personal game. I do have a strong passion for providing bespoke custom fitting and coaching as this is where I feel I can add a lot of value and expertise. I hope in the future to help Matfen Hall to become the destination of choice for these services.

As many of the members will have noticed I do like to keep up to date with the latest golfing fashion, even my friend Bob the mannequin gets compliments on his sharp appearance.

What’s one special memory you have of your time at Matfen Hall?

When I took the bosses – Phil and Mark – onto the course for the first time. It is safe to say they didn’t get a chance to play very often so it is fantastic to see both their passion and progress since that first round. I had the pleasure of having them in my team for the Pro-AM event this week, providing their first taste of competitive golf. In addition to this, it is always special when clients come into the shop and they are beaming from a great round or thankful for their new custom fit clubs making the game much easier and more enjoyable.

What is the best way for someone to begin playing golf at Matfen Hall?

I would definitely recommend they make the most of our Par-3 course. Whether you are someone who doesn’t play as often as you’d like or are just starting to play for the first time, it’s a brilliant introduction to the sport, as it provides a challenge, but it is also a nice place to blow the cobwebs away.

It’s also a great place for players to bring children and to introduce them to the game in a remarkably relaxing environment.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I wouldn’t be a golf Professional if I didn’t say I enjoy nothing more than a round with my friends, I would say in the sun but now I’ve moved up North this is a rare occurrence. Family life is very busy with my baby daughter and step son, safe to say they keep me on my toes. Long family walks in the countryside with a cup of tea in hand is my perfect way to relax.

I have an eleven month old daughter, so I don’t get to relax too much or indeed sleep much either. I do enjoy a cup of tea and a good film, mostly something from the Marvel series, but I also enjoy family days out to National Trust sites.
