Christmas Shopping
Get ahead of the game and avoid the last-minute rush by picking up thoughtful, unique and locally-made gifts from one of Northumberland’s Christmas markets. Travel down the valley to the pretty town of Hexham for its annual Christmas market on the 14th November. Stroll artisan stalls in the grounds of the town’s historic abbey, which dates back to AD674, warm chilled fingers around a fragrant mug of mulled wine and treat yourself to a sweet treat. Head north to the beautiful and expansive Ford and Etal Estate for their two-day festive market on the 23d and 24th of November to browse over X local makers and pick up the perfect present.
And, on December 2nd the picture-perfect village of Corbridge hosts its annual Christmas shopping night. Walk cobbled streets, twinkling with fairy lights to explore its independent shops, listen to classic carols from a live brass band and step into St Andrew’s Church, at t he heart of the village to take a look at its annual Christmas Tree Festival.

Northumberland is a winter wonderland for visiting families. Let little ones unleash pent-up excited energy with a trip to the coast – Bamburgh’s award-winning beaches provide mile upon mile of peaceful walking (or running) with unspoilt and vast seascapes providing a dramatic backdrop. Pay a visit to Bamburgh Castle to warm up and experience A Christmas Through Time in their state rooms.
Closer to home and just down the road from our country hall, Kielder Forest has a festive history, providing the Christmas tree that stands at the foot of Big Ben in London for over 20 years. And on dates from the 16th November, this beautiful woodland is transformed into a winter wonderland, with real reindeer, santa’s elves’ workshop, snow tubing and a Christmas theatre.
For a traditional Christmas experience, hop aboard the Aln Valley Railway to take a real steam train or heritage pacer train from Lionheart Station in Alnwick through rolling scenery to Greenrigg Halt. Head up on 1st December to enjoy a festive market, a miniature railway and steam train rides.
A Season of Light
For a unique and unforgettable winter evening, take part in the tradition of Sankta Lucia in Hexham Abbey on Monday, 16th December. The ancient pillars of the abbey are illuminated with candlelight for this breathtaking traditional Scandinavian event as Lucia processes wearing her crown of candles, celebrating light and radiance during the year’s deepest and darkest month.
Get into nature with a Twilight Lantern Walk at Cragside, available on weekends between 30th November and 15th December. Follow the light of your own lantern to step through the estate’s enchanted Debdon Valley, follow the forest path to meet woodland animals and see the UK’s largest living Christmas tree.
Or, take a trip into nearby Newcastle to see the famous Fenwick’s Christmas window and stroll through Leazes Park to experience an mesmerising world of illumination with the Northern Lights trail and take in a classic festive film (and a few mince pies) at the historic Tyneside Cinema.
