The Sun Terrace

As we move on to The Sun Terrace, we are flanked by dense borders.

This south-facing terrace is a blend of herbaceous perennials and evergreen Ilex crenata pruned into box structures which offer up winter interest with the Phlomis russelina, or Jerusalem sage, seed heads.

The border is packed with cat mint, euphorbia, globe thistles, geraniums, sedums and rudbekia. Senecio “Angel Wings’ and David Austen roses are complemented by fountains of Stipa gigantea grass.

We are now overlooking the grand front lawn onto the Matfen Hall parkland gold course. It is a tranquil landscape of pristine fairways with mature woodland and a lake. Perfect for a sunlit lunch or golden hour cocktails, look out for the swallows that often dart across the lawn in late afternoon.

To the bottom right-hand side of the front lawn sit two, giant Cedrus libani “Cedar of Lebanon”. Well over 100-years-old, this pair still stand strong, like two battle-scarred titans. In the new border to the far right sits a semi mature Ginkgo biloba or ginkgo tree. An ancient species, not uncommon but attractive and with easily identifiable foliage, the ginkgo is a solitary species, there are no other varieties in its family and genus remaining.
